A landslide in Papua New Guinea killed hundreds

A U.N. official in the country stated that after more than 48 hours, at least 670 people were thought to have perished after a landslide that featured stones the size of shipping containers devastated a heavily populated area of Papua New Guinea.

Many residents were asleep when the avalanche happened on Friday at around three in the morning. By Sunday afternoon, search and rescue operations were being hampered, and families were being forced from their houses as a result of the earth continuing to slide, rocks falling, and the soil splitting due to rising pressure and rushing groundwater.
