And the Nightingale Sang at the Heidelberg Theatre Company

Review

And a Nightingale Sang, by C.P. Taylor, is a heartfelt portrayal of a working-class family in Newcastle England during World War II. The play’s charm lies in its blend of humour and emotional depth, with Helen Stott’s character serving as the heart of the story. All the actors deliver their lines with perfect Geordie accents, adding authenticity to the setting. The period music and wartime backdrop and sounds of overhead aircraft and bombs, create an immersive atmosphere. With its richly drawn characters typical of most households and a touching balance of humour and sorrow, the play beautifully captures love and resilience in challenging times. This is a must see.

About the play

Helen is stoical, self-effacing and walks with a limp; her grandfather Andie recruits mourners to attend the burial of his dog; her devout Catholic mother frets about the local priest’s health; her father serenades an unwilling audience with popular songs; and younger sister Joyce dithers over a marriage proposal.
This endearing play about a middle-class household in England during the Blitz of WWII is, at turns, hilarious, romantic, moving, and inspiring.
A family experience that is immediate, touching, and ultimately universal.
