Detectives investigate Dandenong South Factory Fire

Sunday 10 December 2023 7:36am –

Arson and Explosive Squad detectives, with support from Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit, are investigating the circumstances surrounding a Dandenong South factory fire last week.

Emergency services were called to the paint factory, on Superior Drive, following reports of an explosion and fire on Friday 8 December just before midday.

It is believed a delivery of solvents and chemicals were being unloaded at the premises when a large explosion and fire engulfed the area.

Police have been told at the time of the explosion; three men were in close proximity to the delivery being unloaded.

Sadly one of the men, a 57-year-old man, remains unaccounted for.

The two other men, a 62-year-old from Eaglemont and a 44-year-old from Port Melbourne, were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The fire scene was officially handed over to Victoria Police on Saturday evening, once the fire was extinguished.

At this stage the fire scene remains cordoned off and a crime scene guard is in place until the integrity of the structure is deemed safe for police to enter and search for the missing man.

It is expected Arson and Explosives Squad members along with other emergency services, council and an Urban Search and Rescue team will attend the scene today.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and at this stage the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Police have been in constant contact with the family of the missing man and is providing support where needed.
