Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man after a woman was allegedly hit by an e-scooter in East Melbourne last Friday night.

The 81-year-old woman was walking towards Jolimont Railway Station from the MCG when she was allegedly confronted by a man riding an e-scooter about 11pm on Friday 3 May.

As the woman walked away, she was allegedly struck from behind by the e-scooter, causing her to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

The e-scooter rider allegedly did not stop and was chased by a passer-by.

The victim was conveyed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 46-year-old Melbourne man has been charged with recklessly cause injury, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and aggravated assault of a female.

He was remanded and will appear before the Bail and Remand Court tonight.

Ms Hatch’s son, Ken Hatch, described the e-scooter rider as a “gutless coward”.

“I hope he feels ashamed, absolutely, at what he’s done,” Mr Hatch said during a police press conference on Tuesday.

Mr Hatch said he was particularly appalled that the act had occurred after an AFL match dedicated to violence against women.

“The thing that really disturbs me is seeing all the players arm-in-arm in the centre of the MCG in front of 85,000 people talking about zero violence against women, and then literally three hours later this happens,” he said.

“It cuts away your faith.
