North East Melbourne Celebrating Five Year Anniversary of NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has reached an important milestone in the North East Melbourne region, providing support to people with disability in the area for five years as of July 2021.

The NDIS, which rolled out in the region in July 2016, is supporting 11,700 people in North East Melbourne, which includes the local government areas of Banyule, Darebin, Nillumbik, Whittlesea and Yarra.

National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) spokesperson Shannon Rees said this five year anniversary marked significant progress for the North East Melbourne community.

“The NDIS is empowering 11,700 local people in the North East Melbourne region to increase their independence and pursue their goals,” Ms Rees said.

“More than 120,000 people have received support through the NDIS across Victoria, including more than 51,000 people who have received disability supports for the first time since joining the Scheme.

“According to the latest NDIS quarterly report, the Scheme is making a real difference to children living with disability in Victoria with 89 per cent of family and carers of participants aged between 0 to before school age saying the NDIS has improved their child’s development.”

The total number of participants who are benefitting from the NDIS nationwide is almost 450,000, including more than 50 per cent who are receiving disability supports for the first time.
