Sunday 7 January 2024 1:11pm –

Homicide Squad detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Donnybrook this morning. Investigators believe three to five armed men gained access to a property on Middlemount Street about 4.20am on 7 January.

Police have been told a man and a woman were home at the time. It is believed an altercation between the group of men and the couple ensued, leading to shots being fired.

A short time later, officers were called to the address for reports of an injured man outside the property.

Emergency services performed CPR on the man, however he died at the scene.

Police believe the deceased man is one of the armed offenders who attended the property. The man has not been formally identified.

It is believed one of the residents home at the time, a 27-year-old Donnybrook woman, fled to an address in Doreen, before being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The other resident, a 28-year-old man, is assisting police with their enquiries.

A 22-year-old man from Clifton Hill later self-presented to a hospital in Epping with a suspected gunshot wound to the lower body. Police are investigating if he is one of the men who attended the Donnybrook address.

A short time ago, investigators located a firearm in Kumalea Drive, Doreen. Officers are working to establish if this firearm was used in the home invasion. Police believe the incident was targeted.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and a crime scene has been established.
