Swimming and water safety skills are essential

Always keep your eyes on children around water.

As we move out of Covid restrictions towards the warmer summer months, it is worthwhile considering swimming and water safety lessons for toddlers and those of us who need to upgrade our skills in the water.

Banyule has 3 aquatic centres in Greensborough, Heidelberg West and Ivanhoe which provide swim programs that have been successfully delivered to the Banyule community for over 25 years.

There is the highly regarded Learn to Swim program delivered by passionate and experienced AUSTSWIM qualified teachers. All swim teachers hold additional qualifications and registrations including CPR, a current Working with Children Check and a current police check. Many staff have specialty swimming qualifications.

Swimming is for life and has a place for everyone regardless of where in life, skills are at: adult or infant, there are competency levels and age groups to suit everyone.

Water Safety Risks for Toddlers. Last year, half of all drowning deaths in Victoria were children aged 0–4 years. For children that survive drowning incidents, many are hospitalised and can be left with permanent disabilities.

Most fatal drownings occur at home, including backyard swimming pools, bathtubs and dams. Often a lack of supervision combined with inadequate safety barriers around the pool or outdoor spa are found to be a contributing factor to the child’s death. In some cases, a climbing point allowed for easy access to the swimming pool.

Make sure to restrict children’s access to water and always keep them within arm’s reach when around water.

Remember, 20 seconds is all it takes.
