Woman killed in police shooting

A woman has been killed during an incident in Lower Plenty, which subsequently saw a second woman fatally shot by police.

Police were called to a Kett Street address after reports a woman in her 50s was being seriously assaulted by a woman in her 20s about 6.30 pm on Friday, 8 March.

Upon police arrival, members were challenged by a woman in her 20s who was allegedly armed with a knife.

She was subsequently shot by members. That woman, who has yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The second woman was treated by the first responders but also died at the scene.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident, and it is believed the parties were known to each other.

Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per protocol when a police firearm is discharged.
